Hey everyone I'm Todd, lead designer on FaceBreaker. As Tom mentioned we will be starting to post here regularly now that the game is about to be released. We will also be posting and answering your questions here after the game ships and you are all getting your faces broken.
For my first blog I'd like to clear up just one thing: the fact that this game was made by the team that made FNR3 is not entirely correct. It’s true, some of the team that worked on that game did come over to FaceBreaker. But a large portion of that team has continued on with the FightNight franchise and are now hard at work on FNR4. I actually played FNR4 last week and it is already looking and playing awesome. For the record, though, I can’t tell you anything more about it than that. So don’t ask. Now listen up: FaceBreaker is in no way meant to replace Fight Night. Other than the fact that everyone in our game wears boxing gloves and fights in a ring, there are really no similarities between the 2 games. FaceBreaker is as much a fighting game as it is a boxing game, and if you go into it trying to play like a sim boxer you will have no success at all. If you approach it as you would a game like Punch-out, you will have a much better experience. The rest of the team that made FaceBreaker came from all over the company – NBA Street, SSX, NBA, FIFA, NHL, NFS and more. I myself came over to the FaceBreaker team after finishing off the last game I designed, NBA Street Homecourt. In fact, if you look at FaceBreaker you will notice similarities to NBA Street Homecourt immediately - jabs in FaceBreaker = crossovers in NBA Street. And for the record, just as crossovers in Street were not the way to win the game, but simply a hyper-responsive, fun way to build up trick points for combos, so are jabs in FaceBreaker. But we'll talk more about strategy in the coming days.
Thanks for listening.
you know kim kardashian is so,so,so hot.
If this game turns out to be anything like the Demo, evryone I have talked to who has played it will not be purchasing. I hate to say it, but your next blog had better lay it all out to dry. Personally I was looking forward to this game as I was an avid fan of Ready2Rumble which did wacky boxing very, very well. So far I am highly dissapointed. Didn't expect it to be fight night or Ready2Rumble, but I didn't expect it to be this horrible either! Please tell me you all are going to release another demo when this comes out, because at this point the game is a complete and utter fail!
most uk magazines have got reviews out now and it not looking very good for this game,i have seen one 7/10 rest are 3/10 to 4/10. it was a deffo purchase for me when i first seen this game, but after playing demo it stinks, nothing like ready 2 rumble that was much better than this game, this game should have been a cartoon boxing game with the ability to pull off different punches, not high punch or low punch, as a psn game for £10 i might have bought it but no way at a full price game.
I really liked that Q&A that you had on IGN because you did a good job explaining how to use the simple controls to make this game an enjoyable experience. Like other people I did also believe at first that they game was too shallow until I spent some more time with the demo and also read your advice about how to play it, and then I couldn't stop playing it and trying to get better at it.
I'm afraid that many people won't go past that bad first impression and might disregard the game way too soon. I hope that you get to reach more people and help them to understand the gameplay before that happens, since I believe I will enjoy the final product and it would be sad not to see anymore of it in the future in the form of sequels or dlc.
The only thing I would have liked to see was more different animations when the characters are getting hurt, not just during a breaker but also during regular punches, since that cartoony painful look was supposed to be a selling point for this game.
"I'm afraid that many people won't go past that bad first impression and might disregard the game way too soon."
This is our biggest worry too. One thing we really would have loved to have more time on was in refining the learning curve. It can be hard to see the fun parts of the game right away, but if you stick with it for a little while and learn the controls it becomes a ton of fun. Hopefully people see that.
its cooooool
I was very excited to purchase this game. But from all the negative reviews this game is getting. I think my money is better spent elseware. This title is on route to be a total flop. Most reviews state you wot be happy woth the game after a few minutes of play time. HUH?. That is terrible. I have played bad looking games for longer than that, and I still have some of them. What was your thought here. Make it look good but only play time sux? Not with you here. Good luck shrugging off those reviews.
The game is fun when you give it a chance, and get to know the fighters strengths and weaknesses, but most of all when playing with friends or family.
I think the difficulty should have been toned down especially on the easiest setting which by no means is easy. Those looking for some casual arcade fighting fun will be turned off by the pounding they'll receive even in the easiest mode.
Playing against friends or family is where the game shines.
If you can at all tone down the difficulty through a patch (if that's even possible), then I'd strongly recommend you do so. Many will try this and run.
This game is GARBAGE. I went to Best Buy on Tuesday at 1:30pm and waited 30 minutes befor it was placed on the shelves. I was so excited until I put this piece of CRAP in. You will probably get about 2-3 minutes of fun. CAN I GET MY MONEY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
this game sucks
Well, it's not THAT bad. It really can be fun once you get the hang of it, and when played against friend. But it is too unforgiving. The difficulty setting in Brawl for it All is just way too difficult. No game should be that brutal on the easy setting...it just doesn't make sense.
The easy setting in the Fight mode (your vs mode in other fighting games) is just right. I wish they could have implemented that difficulty in Brawl for it All.
I did manage to complete the Brawl, but it was very difficult, and incredibly frustrating at times...it just doesn't match the difficulty setting...I can't say that enough.
Patch this with an update asap. Change the difficulty settings in Brawl to be in line with the "Fight" mode difficulties.
Love the game!funny characters. fast and easy gameplay. it reminds me of "Punch Out" for the NES. same humor.
want 2 see more!
Thanks for the comments David. You're definitely right that it's too hard, and this is something I wish we'd had more time to tune. We'll see if a patch like that is feasible.
You're absolutely right that the meat of the fun is in the multiplayer.
Todd for the sake of the single player game you really need a patch. The game is really for the casual market but I'm affraid that it's way to difficult in single player on easy as the other post have stated. I have no other complaints. Great looking and interesting title that needs further tweeking before word of mouth crushes all hopes of a sequel.
great game easy to play lots of fun great job looks great lots of laughs apply the same thing to the new ssx
"We'll see if a patch like that is feasible"
That would be awesome tmunro!
yes please please i beg you please make a patch or sumthing to tone down the stupid difficulty, i waited soooo long to get this game and i was excited when it came out, but now i kinda regret getting it because i slammed my controller on the ground and broke it because i kept loosing, please tone down the difficulty so people dont go around busting controllers and TV's like me =D
Okay, so here is one video of how to beat ICE:

It's on that page, in the videos section.
I thought this game was going to be cool. Truth of the matter is the commercials are better than the game itself. I have been playing video games for a long time and this is up there with one of the worst. I rented this game and took it back the very next day. Just a bunch of button mashing and frustration. If anyone is thinking about buying this game, DONT.
Hey, sorry you had a disappointing time with the game. You're right to be frustrated; the game doesn't do the best job of showing you the right way to play it. I'd encourage you to check out some videos of strategy, because they show some of the more clever ways to play. There's the video I posted above, and there's a couple of videos by one of our community members which are pretty good examples of some skills.

beautiful game + crappy gameplay = terrible game
ugly game + great gameplay = decent game
why spend so much time on the looks if your gonna make a lousy performing game ..... easy setting??? B.S. no one that buys this game will be happy, ive been gaming since the atari 2600 i know vid games, this one blows
and dont give me the "watch a vid for stratagy" thing, i can play it just fine, and have no problems getting to the end, but casual players just wont be able to play it vs. the cpu. the controls are way too clumsy, when you go to do a parry or block, it seems the controls selectivly, either allow it or dont. and that is frustrating, hitting the block button, and it doesnt block, the attack buttons are dead on, but blocking and parry just dont react the way they need to. i really wish you took this games visuals, and paired it with a fightnight style control. i mean leave the button mashing or what ever, but make it so you can actually defend yourselve. the lack of an effective defensive system, WILL, I REPEAT WILL FRUSTRATE THE SOUL FROM YOUR BODY!!! and its such a beautiful game, best looking yet. it just needs better controls. remember this for version 2,(if they think its even worth doing) and you will have the next "super punch out"
This is ridiculous.
I've been a gamer for 2 decades and I've never played a game that's so frustrating. You're a.i. programmers did a crappy job. It's virtually unplayable.
There are a lot of gamers that don't even go to websites like this to view strategy guides. They try to figure it out themselves and this game is just too unforgiving for that.
How this got past QA is a riddle....
I'm guessing the sales are terrible because of the reviews and crappy demo. It's a shame, because this game could have been fun for hardcore and casual gamer.
Funny thing there isnt any real mention for a patch, so I'm gonna return to the store and buy a game that's balanced.
Please patch this. Tone the AI down to the point that I have a chance on Fierce. Who play tested this? Probally the same group of testers that tested Midnight Club LA. Nothing this difficult can be fun.
I bought this game for the face making ability and now that seems to be gone--! The only way this game is playable is if you face another person--the AI stinks.
Welcome fellow FaceBreakers. Hopefully this blog will be a lot like the game-funny, addictive and no holds barred. Let us know what you'd like to see from screenshots to hotshot producer interviews. Send your suggestions to facebreakercommunity@ea.com and knuckle up!
